Water Services collects all the wastewater that comes from our homes, schools, businesses, and industry in a sanitary sewer system. The sanitary sewer system by means of gravity or lift stations brings wastewater to one of our wastewater treatment plants (Bonnybrook, Fish Creek and Pine Creek) for treatment. Here wastewater undergoes treatment through a series of processes in order to be cleaned. Clean water is eventually released into the Bow River and the separated solids are recycled as fertilizer and soil conditioner for agricultural lands under the Calgro Bio Solids Program.
To reduce liability under OH & S legislation, Wastewater Treatment responsibly allocates the function of Prime Contractor when needed, and retains the function of Prime Contractor when required. For this contracted work, the function of Prime Contractor cannot be allocated.
As Prime Contractor, Wastewater Treatment will not be assigning or directing how work is performed by contracted workers or equipment. Instead Wastewater Treatment implements and monitors safety management systems/processes at the contracted worksite having two primary focuses:
- Ensure employers and contractors at the contracted worksite have a good plan to perform their work in a manner complying with OH & S legislation, then monitor the implementation and continued effectiveness of the plan.
- Manage interaction between the contracted employers and Wastewater Treatment staff to ensure - The work and operational processes of one, does not endanger the health and safety of the others.
Just as we do for our permanent employees, we expect contractors to follow the rules and regulations we have defined in order to keep all people working for The City of Calgary safe and healthy.
Always remember that as contractors for The City of Calgary, remember that you are expected to conduct yourselves in public in a manner befitting this organization (refer to CoC’s Code of Conduct and Corporate Policies).
